Enterprise centre increases opportunities for deaf community

Over £1 million lent to community-owned shops

Co-operative & Community Finance has now loaned over £1 million to support over 60 community-owned shops throughout the UK in the past two years.  The milestone was reached with a loan to Gaydon Village Store in Oxfordshire.

Loan cuts unfair ‘beer ties’

A substantial loan from Co-operative & Community Finance has helped a struggling workingmen’s club in South Wales to free itself from a very disadvantageous tied arrangement with a brewery.  The community-led initiative to save Blaengarw Workingmen’s Club is expected to inspire other clubs and pubs, especially since the iniquity of ‘beer ties’ was highlighted in the government’s new action plan for pubs announced last month.

Support for community-owned pubs announced

Co-operative & Community Finance will be providing new loans designed to help communities set up and run their local pubs.  The loans will be in addition the £3.3m provided by the government in a support programme announced by Pubs Minister John Healey on 18 March to give practical support to community pubs.

Employees buy Scottish robot maker

One of Scotland’s world-leading design and technology companies has been bought by its 30 employees.  Clansman Dynamics, based in East Kilbride, designs and builds robotic handling equipment which is used in forges and foundries in 34 different countries.

CEU Ltd (Community Enterprise Unit), an Exeter-based workers’ co-operative, has been revealed as the latest company to receive a loan from Co-operative & Community Finance’s PLC Fund. With a strong ethical commitment to the third sector, CEU will use the loan to expand its services throughout the South West and help meet the long-term goals of the business.

C&CF loan makes for headline news

Co-operative and Community Finance- the lender for social purpose- is pleased to announce that West Highlands Free Press has become the UK’s only employee-owned newspaper, after a loan was approved from the Co-operative Loan Fund and ICO Fund PLC to support an employee buyout. With the help of Co-operative and Community Finance and the Baxi Partnership, West Highlands Free Press is now owned by ten of its employees who will ensure the paper continues to remain independent and rooted in the community.

An even bigger splash!

Co-operative and Community Finance is pleased to announce it has approved a loan to the award-winning Chipping Norton Lido, which will cover the costs of making the pool more energy efficient. The outdoor pool which has become famous for immersing upmarket cars is currently undergoing large scale work to replace its gas boiler with a ground source heating system and associated photo-voltaic solar panels.
